The Montana Media Lab is looking for classrooms to partner with this fall! Are you a teacher or staff member at a rural high school near Missoula? Are you interested in bringing a hands-on reporting workshop to your school or classroom? Fill out the recruitment form below.

The Montana Media Lab Youth Voices program partners with classrooms and teen programs in rural and Indigenous communities around Montana to lead journalism workshops, culminating in a radio piece covering a story important to students in their area.

This fall, we’re looking for rural high schools within an hour and a half of Missoula to report student-driven stories with. We are partnering with 2-3 classrooms this fall. If we are not able to work with you this semester, we would love to stay in contact for future workshops!

Qualifications:

– Your school is at most 1.5 hours away from Missoula

– Your school is in Lake, Flathead, or Missoula county

– Your school is in a rural area with a population of 5,000 or less

– The workshop must fall between September 7-December 11, 2026

Youth Voices Workshop Recruitment Form Fall 2026

In partnership with the University of Montana School of Journalism’s annual High School Day, the Montana Media Lab Youth Voices program hosts a free, extended journalism workshop experience. Students involved with the Montana Media Lab Youth Voices workshop will attend the School of Journalism’s High School Day in April 2027 and continue learning and reporting for an additional two days afterward. All high school journalism groups in Montana are eligible to apply.

Hotel rooms and meals for teachers and students will be provided.

Each spring, The Montana Media Lab hires two interns for the following summer and fall. The internship is designed to provide University of Montana students with hands-on journalism and teaching experience and to provide each intern with finished product audio stories to add to their portfolio. The program allows interns to gain practical skills in journalism, multimedia storytelling, and education, while also contributing to the mission of the Montana Media Lab.

Internship Specifics:

• Duration: 160 hours split between summer break and the fall semester
• Compensation: $20 per hour
• Supervisors: Mary Auld (MML Director), Lotus Porte-Moyel (Youth Voices Program Coordinator)
• Workspace: Shared office space in the Montana Media Lab is provided

Responsibilities include: 

• Assist with a youth audio storytelling workshops at two tribal colleges over the summer. Help the Media Lab team to teach high school students the basics of identifying an audio story, reporting it, and creating a finished product.
• Support 2-3 classroom-based workshops in partnership with schools over the fall semester. The intern will support the class in developing their story through interviews, research, and in-class instruction.
• Document the workshops and make social media and web content to spread the word about the program.
• Work closely with supervisors and the Montana Media Lab team to carry out other mission-related activities.

Preferred experience and qualifications: 

• Experience living or working in rural and/or Indigenous communities
• Skills in teaching and mentoring teens
• Stellar communication skills with colleagues, students and high school teachers
• Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic scenarios
• Ability to manage a variable work schedule
• Ability to produce journalistic stories for professional outlets, especially in audio
• Familiarity with journalistic standards and ethics
