Educating and inspiring young visual storytellers at the University of Montana School of Journalism.
The Workshop
The Montana Photo Workshop, hosted at the University of Montana School of Journalism, is a 4-day intensive photojournalism workshop that brings college student photojournalists and young photographers, with less than 3 years professional experience, together with a team of dedicated instructors from the University of Montana and associated partners. Workshop participants receive real-world, professional, dynamic and meaningful mentorship while exploring a diverse set of stories from the greater Missoula community. We aim to make this an affordable workshop for students and early career professionals. We uphold high ethical and educational standards as we empower the next generation of visual storytellers with new skills, techniques and confidence. The first annual workshop was held in 2024.

The workshop accepts up to 16-20 students, keeping the instructor to student ratio at 2 instructors for each 5 students. Students are divided into teams to cover stories and themes in the greater Missoula community. The key learning from the workshop occurs during the field sessions, editing sessions and critiques. Additionally, participants learn from instructor presentations and portfolio reviews during the workshop.
