Writing Across Platforms

Join long-time journalist, teacher, writer and entrepreneur Courtney Lowery Cowgill for a two-day workshop on writing for the media. You’ll explore why good writing is critical on any platform, from print to screen to social media. And, you’ll learn simple ways to make your writing clearer, stronger and more effective, focusing on voice, grammar (of course!), structure and flow. Whether you need help crafting stronger press releases, making your organization’s newsletters shine or creating compelling online content, Courtney will get you where you need to be with your writing.

- Who is this workshop for?
Nonprofit and small business staff, freelance journalists, community members — anyone looking to hone their writing skills across multiple platforms.
- Who is the instructor?
Courtney Lowery Cowgill is a writer, editor and entrepreneur. She is an adjunct professor and the director of media and engagement at the School of Journalism. Her writing has appeared in newspapers, magazines, online publications, wire services, just about every social media platform and in good, old-fashioned books, too.

- How long are workshop days?
9am – 3pm
- What will I leave the workshop with?
A solid understanding of writing flow, grammar, sentence structure, and how to achieve your writing goals across multiple applications — from social media and blogging to websites and press releases.
- What do I need to bring?
We recommend a laptop or notebook for writing exercises and taking notes.
- What about meals?
Lunches are on your own. There will be a lunch break from 12-1pm each day. Missoula has lots of great restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance of the Montana Media Lab, so we promise you won’t go hungry.
- Will I need a car?
Not unless you want to explore beyond Missoula. Otherwise, Missoula’s no-fare bus system will get you just about anywhere you want to go within the city.
- What is the maximum enrollment for this workshop?
- Can I take this workshop for college credit?
No. This workshop is not offered for college credit.
- I’m a teacher. Can I earn OPI renewal units for this workshop?
Yes. You will earn 12 renewal units for this workshop.
- What’s your refund policy?
Because our workshops are planned months in advance, we are unable to issue refunds unless the Montana Media Lab cancels your workshop. If that happens, you will be issued a full refund.
