SUMMARY:Telling Visual Stories with Data
DESCRIPTION:Want to know how to produce compelling\, code-based data visualizations like ones you’ve seen in the New York Times and FiveThirtyEight? In this two-day workshop\, Montana Free Press data reporter Eric Dietrich will guide you through the workflow he uses to clean\, visualize and annotate data to produce graphics using Google Sheets\, the code-based visualization tool Vega and Adobe Illustrator. You’ll also be introduced to the Jupyter Lab environment for working with data using open source Python tools\, and discuss how to combine data visualizations with narrative reporting and storytelling. This workshop meets January 28 & 29 from 9am – 5pm. \n \n  \nInstructor\nEric Dietrich\nMontana Free Press \n  \nFAQs\n\nWho is this workshop for?\nPeople with at least intermediate computer skills interested in an introduction to using open source coding tools to transform data into compelling visual presentations. Attendees should be comfortable wrangling data in a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets and prepared to work through the technical hurdles that are an inevitable part of working with code-based tools.\nWho is the instructor?\nEric Dietrich is Helena-based data reporter and designer with the Montana Free Press\, where his data visualization work is routinely republished by newspapers across Montana. He previously worked as a reporter for the Great Falls Tribune\, Bozeman Daily Chronicle and Solutions Journalism Network Montana Gap project.\nWhat are the dates and times of this workshop?\nThis workshop meets for two consecutive days (January 28 and 29) from 9am-5pm at the Montana Media Lab.\nWhat will I leave the workshop with?\nA working understanding of how to clean\, visualize and annotate data to produce compelling charts\, as well as familiarity with the Python-based Jupyter Lab analysis environment and the Vega/Altair data visualization toolkit. Time-permitting\, the workshop will also provide guided support as attendees develop a visualization project using a dataset of their choice.\nWhat equipment is provided? What do I need to bring?\nWe have 12 desktop (Mac) computers available for use during the workshop. You’re also welcome to bring your own laptop\, but we ask that you have Anaconda Python distribution (free) and Adobe Illustrator (free 7-day trial) installed prior to the start of the workshop. Please also bring an easily acquired dataset that you’d like to use for a visualization project.\nCan I use my own laptop instead of the desktop computers?\nYes. See above.\nWhat about meals?\nThere will be a lunch break from 12-1pm each day. DESCRIPTION:Over the course of five days\, NPR Story Lab senior producer Michael May will guide participants through reporting\, editing and mixing an audio feature. The workshop will cover interviewing and gathering sound\, writing and editing a script\, and cutting and mixing audio. We will also discuss what makes a podcast successful\, and participants will create a blueprint for planning\, producing and marketing their own podcast. \n \n  \nInstructor\nMichael May is the Senior producer of the\nNPR Story Lab in Washington\, D.C. \n  \nFAQs\n\nWho is this workshop for?\nAnyone just starting out in radio who wants to make a podcast or learn the basics of audio storytelling. If you’ve dabbled in audio storytelling (or even had something on air)\, but want to learn proper reporting\, editing and production techniques\, this workshop is also for you.\nWho is the instructor?\nMichael May is the senior producer of the NPR Story Lab in Washington\, D.C. He works with NPR newsroom staff to pitch and produce podcasts\, videos\, web stories\, and new series for broadcast. Previously\, he taught radio at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies and is the winner of three National Headliners Awards\, two Edward R. Murrow awards and a Third Coast Audio Festival Gold Award for his radio work.\nWho is the teaching assistant?\nNora Saks is a radio reporter and producer based in Butte\, Mont. She is the producer of Richest Hill\, a podcast for Montana Public Radio about one of America’s most notorious Superfund sites.\nWhat will I leave the workshop with?\nA 3-6 minute broadcast quality audio profile about an interesting person in the community and a project blueprint to launch your own podcast.\nWhat equipment is provided? What do I need to bring?\nWe will provide audio gear\, computer (Mac) and editing software for the duration of the workshop. You’ll need to bring an external hard drive (500GB or 1TB).\nCan I use my own laptop instead of the desktop computers?\nYes\, as long as you have the latest version of Adobe Audition installed on your laptop.\nWhat audio editing software will I learn?\nAdobe Audition\nHow long are workshop days?\nClass starts at 8am or 9am each day and usually finishes around 5pm. Final production days may run later since our goal is to make sure you have a finished\, broadcast-quality audio piece by the end of the workshop. Plan to work hard and leave tired.\nWhat about meals?\nWe will provide lunch on day two of the workshop. All other meals are on your own. Missoula has lots of great restaurants and cafes within easy biking and walking distance of the Montana Media Lab.\nWill I need a car?\nThat depends on you. We’ll provide you with a bike for the week to get to and from the Lab and for late night ice cream runs. If you want to report your audio profile on someone outside of Missoula\, you will need a car.
